WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK
WEEK OF 10/22
Students will be working on their timelines of the first century in Church history this week. They'll highlight events such as Pentecost, some of the first martyrs, and the Gospels being written. Later in the week they'll also be practicing their "Saint Skits" for All Saints Day next week Thursday. WEEK OF 10/15 We have a short week this week, but students are getting started on their next unit: Church history. There's no way to cover over 2,000 years of history in detail, so we're not going to try. Instead, over the next couple months, students will break the entire history down into various eras, highlighting the key events and the saints who lived during that time. This week we'll cover why we study history and an introduction to Pentecost. WEEK OF 10/8 Last week we started a rather odd lesson on the design of houses and porches and how it relates to our sense of community and solidarity. This week students are designing their own neighborhood with features that help bring about a better sense of solidarity between everyone. WEEK OF 10/1 This week we will look at the role of relationships in our lives and why they are necessary and valuable. This will allow us to expand on the concept of society, and more specifically, the Catholic social teaching of solidarity, in which we're all called to the "distribution of material and spiritual goods." WEEK OF 9/24 Students are taking a survey over the first two days this week. This survey, issued by the publisher of our new religion textbook series, will be taken three times this year (beginning, middle, and end). The majority of survey is opinion questions about the individual student's perception of their Catholic faith. Another portion of it asks some basic content questions about Church history and doctrine. It is NOT a graded test - it simply gives the publisher some data points to direct their instruction in the future. We're also moving through our lesson on the vocation of love, or as our book calls it, "a gift of self." The focus is on the differences between society's various definitions of love and God's idea of love as charity. WEEK OF 9/17 This week we're comparing the concepts of human dignity and the purpose of government as seen through the eyes of the Catechism and the Declaration of Independence. WEEK OF 9/10 Students are doing some goal-setting in preparation for their two retreat days later this week. Please make sure you've read the letter from Ms. Giroux regarding the schedule for Thursday's trip to camp and the things students will need to bring. We will also be continuing our lesson on the Holy Trinity and how it's a example of how we are called to work with and love those around us. WEEK OF 9/3 This week we'll continue our unit on personal growth with a look at the Trinity of Persons and how love is reciprocated between the Father and Son through the Holy Spirit. Similarly, we are made in the image of God, so we, too, are made to reciprocate the love God gives us. WEEK OF 8/27 Students are being introduced to this year's edition of the the "Spirit of Truth" series. We'll start by looking at some famous art pieces to introduce the importance of community within the church and the world at large. |
